When should the oil be changed?

Catol Lux wants to keep your car running like new for as long as possible. So we’ve created a small guide of the top 5 signs your car needs an oil change.

1. Dark and dirty oil. Pure amber oil. After a while, the fluid darkens and becomes contaminated from all the particles it collects from the engine. Therefore, we recommend checking the oil every month. To do this, remove the dipstick from the engine and wipe it with a clean cloth that does not leave fibers and insert it back. After a few seconds, you can remove the dipstick and if the oil layer is thick and dark, you can safely plan an oil change.

2. The engine started to run louder. As mentioned above, clean engine oil provides a thin barrier between engine parts. When there is not enough oil in the engine, the parts begin to rub against each other and therefore, you will hear a louder engine noise. If you ignore it, then in the near future you will hear a knock, rumble and even a roar, which means that your car is in dire need of an oil change.

3. Oil level sensor. As soon as the oil level indicator on the dashboard of your car lights up, immediately check the oil with a dipstick and if it is not enough, then change it as soon as possible.

4. Exhaust smoke. Oil change warning signs usually show translucent steam coming out of the exhaust pipe in cold weather. If you notice smoke, check your oil because the engine may be leaking oil.

Smoke can also indicate faulty parts in your engine. Therefore, if you see that your car has enough oil, ask a professional to run diagnostics to identify the problem and fix it immediately.

5. The smell of oil in the cabin. The smell of oil in the cabin is a huge warning sign. Generally, if the smell is strong, it means there is a leak. This indicates that your car is overheating and oil is burning in the exhaust area.

In addition to the top five warning signs listed above, you can also keep an eye on your odometer. Most drivers rely on it to determine when it’s time for an oil change, but what many don’t know is that there are different oil change schedules for certain vehicles. As a general rule, we recommend that most motorists change their oil every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever comes first. If you’ve just bought a car, you should schedule an oil change every 10,000 km, or every six months. While these recommendations are good guidelines, it’s best to check your vehicle’s manual for a more accurate oil change and your vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
